芹沢 SERIZAWA Developer’s Log 10: A Prayer for Peace

This blog will be my developer's journal through the process of creating "SERIZAWA," an interactive fiction game, that tells the story of Dr. Serizawa from the original Japanese film "Gojira."

After Godzilla’s second attack on Tokyo, Emiko and Ogata visit Dr. Serizawa to persuade him to use the Oxygen Destroyer to kill Godzilla. Initially, Dr. Serizawa denies the existence of the Oxygen Destroyer and refuses to use it. However, he is moved to action when he sees a choir of children singing “A Prayer for Peace” while images of a devastated Tokyo play on the small television in his laboratory. The lyrics to the song were written by Shigeru Kayama and it was composed by Akira Ifukube.

This scene was made to depict devastation similar to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Unknown to the audience, Dr. Serizawa is beginning to understand he must use his Oxygen Destroyer to destroy Godzilla, which also means he too must die, so the secrets of the Oxygen Destroyer may never be used against his fellow man.

“If the Oxygen Destroyer is used even once, the politicians of the world won't stand idly by. They'll inevitably turn it into a weapon. A-bombs against A-bombs, H-bombs against H-bombs - as a scientist - no, as a human being - adding another terrifying weapon to humanity's arsenal is something I can't allow.”

“We human beings are weak creatures. Even if I burn my notes. Everything’s still in my head. As long as I’m alive, who can say I wouldn’t be coerced into using it again?”

- Dr. Serizawa

Normally scenes with so many unique tiles would be useless in the current GB Studios, but with the new 4.0 update coming out, they are doubling the unique tile counts and allowing for colored .png files to be used in the engine.

Many more scenes to go. Thanks for reading.
